Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop On Matching Pouts and Outfits, Décolletage as an Accessory and a Lull in Crazy Nail Art

Trend report bold lipstick, plunging necklines, nail artWireImage; Getty; WireImage Inset: FilmMagic

In our weekly round-up of what we’re seeing sizzle (and fizzle) on the red carpet, we noticed stars matching their lip color to their ensembles, cleavage as an accessory — and one standout mani amid a bunch of nude nails. Consider this your fashion forecast.

Up: Décolletage as an accessory. These stars had no shame in their cleavage games. As if Gabrielle Union’s Marc Bouwer mini didn’t make enough of a statement with its beaded detailing, the plunging neckline sure got our attention. Vanessa Hudgens tried her hand at a high-fashion Jenny Packham jumpsuit with a daring front, and nabbed a 71 percent approval rating! Also braving the trend: Kate Moss in Prada, Malin Akerman in J. Mendel and Lake Bell in Dolce & Gabbana.

Up: Coordinating pouts and outfits. Summer is a perfect time to experiment with bold lip color — and this week, stars doubled down by matching their shades to their equally standout outfits. Selena Gomez leads the pack with her crimson pout, which perfectly compliments her red Dolce & Gabbana dress. Dita Von Teese paired her signature red shade with a rose-print gown. In the accessories department, Zendaya Coleman matched her coral lip hue to her pumps, and Miranda Kerr had a three-way match-off between her lips, tote and studded sandals.

Down: Crazy Nail Art. Earlier in the summer, over-the-top manis were everywhere. But not this week. Bare beds, neutral colors and opaque paint jobs were most popular. In that mix, Hailee Steinfeld’s Comic-Con themed style definitely made a statement. And we like the look for the 16-year-old actress, who clearly loves to experiment with bold prints and patterns. But we have a feeling crazy designs are on the decline … for the moment, anwyway.

From Date Night to Brunch, What to Wear This Weekend

It’s so incredibly hot in the northeast that we can’t think about wearing colors other than white, or outfits that require more than fourteen seconds to put together. Luckily these three stars seemed to be on the same page, so we present to you: What to wear this weekend, the breezy white dress edition.

Octavia Spencer white dress Munawar Hosain/Startraks

Saturday night: We’ve advised you on how to look sexy for drinks and dancing and laid back for dinner and a movie — but what if you’ve got something a little fancier planned? Octavia Spencer’s sweet Tadashi Shoji dress is the perfect number for when you know he’ll be staring at you over candles and wine all night. Between its face-framing neckline, silhouette-flattering shape and tiers of feminine ruffles, it’s exactly what Elle Woods would have worn for her “bridal … but not like I expect anything” important date dress.

Want to get a similar look for less? This Gianni Bini dress is just $52.15 and just begging for a pretty black ribbon belt and some classy pumps.

Sunday brunch: Don’t be that girl who can’t sit outside with her friends because she needs to be in the AC. This totally breezy Lovers + Friends “Sunshine” dress (as seen on Vanessa Hudgens) is designed for al fresco dining (with the added bonus that the tented shape lets you indulge in that extra bacon). Hudgens’s black accessories (boho turban, chic bag and Joe’s pumps) give the flowy, lacy babydoll look a little edge to save it from being toothache-inducing.

Be equally breezy in this $69 Lucca Couture pleated dress — and if you’re like us and can’t bear to wear pumps on Sunday morning, you can swap in a pair of skin-baring flat sandals instead.

Aubrey Plaza white dress

Monday morning: We are strong proponents of fool-proof Monday morning dressing so that you can hit snooze as often as possible. And you can’t get much easier than Aubrey Plaza’s crisp, chic Comic Con ensemble — a structured, fitted top with a sleek pencil skirt and some take-no-prisoners pink pumps. She keeps the lines clean, adding just a statement ring and nothing else. Only you have to know that a look this put-together required absolutely no effort.

Ready to replicate? We’ve got your structured top, cute skirt and spiked pink pumps right here.

You’ll Never Guess How Many Pairs of Jeans Vanessa Hudgens Owns

Vanessa Hudgens jeansMichael Simon/Startraks

Every girl needs options, and Vanessa Hudgens is no different. While most StyleWatchers own between 6-10 pairs of jeans, the actress has just a few more than that. Her estimate? “Like … 40 to 50 pairs?”

And that’s after cutting way down. “I used to have so many!” the star told PEOPLE at an American Eagle event in N.Y.C. Tuesday. “I got rid of a ton because my closet space was getting very, very cramped.”

RELATED: Have you voted in our denim awards poll yet?

Even so, Hudgens admits that the remaining pairs in her closet total up to “more than I wear for sure,” and adds that she can’t pick just one go-to pair of blue jeans.

“Once a week I’ll have a new favorite,” she said, wearing her current favorite American Eagle style with a Danielle Stevens pendant to launch the company’s “Rock Your Walk” campaign. “You don’t have to stick to one thing.” For instance: She can’t wait to slip back into corduroys with fall approaching.

And though her casual wear is always noteworthy, it’s her red carpet style that’s been catching our eye lately — and Hudgens revealed the secret to a fabulous look. “Nothing is off limits,” she said. “Mix it up and be whoever you want to be. When you dress the part, you feel the part!”

Tell us: How many pairs of jeans do you own? What’s your favorite pair?

Summer may be winding down, but don’t tell that to Vanessa Hudgens. The star just stepped out with some seriously sun-kissed hair.

Sporting her favorite summer accessory — a baseball cap — the actress showed off sleek flat-ironed strands with an under layer of spun-gold tips. The stark half-blonde effect was a slightly punkier take on traditional ombré, though it may blend more throughout her naturally curly hair.

The star loves to play with her hair, so it’s hard to say how long this will last, but for the moment, we’re loving this fun end-of-summer style.

Another ’90s Trend Is Back In a Big Way

The Backstreet Boys are touring, Britney Spears has a big single out and everyone is wearing overalls. Are we sure it’s not actually 1998?

Further adding to our suspicion that we’ve time traveled (see also: floral sundresses and crop tops galore) is the latest trend we’ve seen on stars from Rihanna to AnnaSophia Robb (neither pictured).

RELATED PHOTOS: See (and vote on) more out-there star style in “Obsessed or Hot Mess?

Though relegated in recent years to moms just trying to be practical and bring a sweater with them to the movies, the shirt tied purposefully around the waist is making a major comeback on stylish stars including (from left) Gwen Stefani, Vanessa Hudgens and Nicole Richie.

While Stefani and Richie both attempt high-fashion versions of the grungy look, Hudgens wears hers the most like we remember: Plaid, beat-up and ready to be repurposed as a slouchy top at a moment’s notice. Of course, this trend wasn’t always intentional the first time around — sometimes a girl just really needed a top to tie around her waist at a certain moment.

Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on 3-D Prints, Peach Pumps and the Most Bizarre Braid We’ve Seen All Summer

0

3-D prints, peach pumps, braidsJon Kopaloff/FilmMagic; Richard Shotwell/Invision/

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we noticed stars giving bold 3-D prints a shot and a new shoe hue we’re really into. Plus, we spotted one braid that left us in knots. Consider this your fashion forecast.

Up: 3-D Prints. Jennifer Aniston braved florals this week, so now we dare the star to try out this bold print trend. Olivia Wilde made us want to pull out our 3-D glasses and grab a bucket of popcorn in her psychedelic Clover Canyon mini. Plus, the orchids on Ashley Tisdale’s Clover Canyon mini almost managed to distract us from her Godzilla-sized engagement ring.

Up: Peach Pumps. Are white pumps finally on their way out? We kind of hope so. And we’d be perfectly happy if peach heels take their place. Emmy Rossum paired her Rebecca Minkoff plaid mini with Alice + Olivia lizard pumps that we kind of want to splurge on. And Ashley Tisdale is a double-trendsetter this week (pat yourself on the back, Tiz), pairing her dress with the fruity heels.

Down: Super-Messy Braids. Yes, braids are a very popular summer style. But lately stars have been keeping their plaits soft and simple (see Bella Thorne and Amber Heard). Vanessa Hudgens, however, tossed “simple” out the window for a super-sloppy braid piled on top of her head that was just too messy to endorse.

Vanessa Hudgens: I Describe My Style as ‘a Female With Mood Swings’

Vanessa Hudgens styleStartraks

There’s never a dull moment when it comes to Vanessa Hudgens‘s style, and as it turns out, there’s a very simple explanation for that.

“I’m a female with mood swings,” Hudgens explained of her style philosophy at a Lucky Brand event Sunday. “That’s what I love about fashion. You can be whoever you want to be … I’m a female, I can’t make up my mind!”

The star says she tends to lean more boho, as evidenced by her commitment to not committing to shoes on the red carpet. As soon as they start to hurt, “I’m a barefoot kind of girl … Actually, I’d prefer it. When it’s time [to lose the shoes] I don’t mind.”

RELATED PHOTOS: Vote on more star style in Last Night’s Look!

One thing she’s also known for on the red carpet: Showing off her totally amazing abs. And they’re definitely hard-won, a result of her nonstop workout routine. “What do I not do is the question?! No, I do so much, I work out so much. It’s my addiction. Serious addiction.”

On her workout menu: SoulCycle, yoga, and anything she can do to “something with a heavy beat that you can just let yourself go, you know?” All of which adds up to her favorite feeling in the world: Being fit. “You just feel like you can accomplish anything. When you push yourself through a really hard workout, it’s a mental thing rather than a physical thing … and I love that. It’s a good self-esteem booster.”

Tell us: How do you make yourself feel good? Fashion, exercise or something else?

New York Fashion Week is (finally) over, which means we’re stashing our artfully layered ensembles and opting for maximum ease and plenty of denim for our well-deserved days off. And that cute-but-comfy plan is extending well into the workweek with an effortless, fall-ready look. Care to join us? Check out our outfit inspiration below.

Jessica Alba NCP/Star Max/Filmmagic

Saturday night: Scientifically proven fact: Guys looooove a girl in tight blue jeans. So we have a feeling Jessica Alba‘s hubby Cash Warren is a big fan of these sexy J Brands. But Alba gave her blues a little night-out boost thanks to some expert print-mixing (plaid and leopard, huh?) and some super-sexy teal heels.

Want to get the look? First, shimmy into your favorite pair of second-skin denim. Then add a plaid button-up (this Rails top is marked down from $115 to just $19!), leopard clutch (use a Banana Republic discount code to get this one for 35% off) and some gorgeous (and on-trend) pumps. Be sure to get up from your table a lot so he can watch you walk away.

Vanessa Hudgens Lester Cohen/Wireimage

Sunday brunch: And here are the jeans your girlfriends will love: Relaxed, ripped and so worn-in they’re like wearing a tee. Top them with a great patterned top and light sweater so you can sit outside for the last sunny “summer” days, then add chunky wedges to complete the boho vibe (Vanessa Hudgens would give you high marks!)

Again, dig out those baby blues, then add a great graphic top and get your ’90s on with some chunky stacked heels.

Amanda Seyfried Neil P. Mockford/Filmmagic

Monday morning: And finally, let’s all thank Amanda Seyfried for making our Monday mornings a little easier. We fully plan on emulating this outfit — it’s just a simple shift, a great jacket and classic heels, but somehow all put together it’s the perfect mix of transitional, stylish and professional.

Start with the dress (this Asos one – on sale! – is similar) and jacket, then alter the rest of the look depending on your office. Keep the sandals and loose locks if you’re somewhere creative; swap them out for pumps and a ponytail somewhere more conservative. Regardless, relish in the fact that it took you thirty seconds to get ready this morning.

Vanessa Hudgens Dyes Her Hair to Match Fall's Changing Leaves ... Obviously

We’re familiar with the concept of dying one’s hair to match the seasons — going blonder in summer and darker in winter, for instance. But dying one’s hair to match the changing fall foliage? Leave it to Vanessa Hudgens to introduce us to a completely new concept.

“Autumn hair ;) thanks to @hellobeautifulsalonnyc and @hollystyls,” the actress wrote as she posted a pic of her new hue(s) to Instagram. And lest you think that the changing red, gold and chestnut colors are just a result of some tricky filtering, the salon shared its own pic of the star — and it’s definitely a bold new look for her.

We’re used to ombré locks by now, but this takes it to an advanced level. Hudgens’s ends are a bright golden yellow, fading into a stripe of russet red that’s woven into her natural brown hair. The star is no stranger to out-there hair, which definitely gives her some extra points in the “is she pulling this off?” column. But what we’ve got to know is, what do you think of her leaf-inspired locks?

YouTube Music Awards: Lady Gaga's 'Decaying Teeth' and Other Looks We Can't Stop Talking About

We had a feeling the YouTube Music Awards would be have the same anything-goes fashion policy as the MTV VMAs. And we were right.

Host Vanessa Hudgens donned a medieval mosaic-printed Dolce & Gabbana gown, similar to Katy Perry’s Met Gala dress. She teamed the look with gold sparkle pumps, loose waves and a wine-colored pout. And while it’s definitely out-of-the-box, we think this look totally works on the fashion risk-taker.

RELATED PHOTOS: See more star styles in Last Night’s Look

Speaking of risk-takers, Lady Gaga continued her parade of one-of-a-kind style choices, hitting the carpet with an interesting looking grill of teeth by Gilding Primal Instinct.

“It is actually a cuff bracelet that I sell in my ready to wear collection,” Danielle Nicole Hills, the jewelry designer behind the brand, tells PEOPLE. “Although it wasn’t custom designed for her, her use of it in her mouth made it truly unique. This is the first piece of mine that she has worn. I definitely hope there will be others.”

And you can own the same piece for $180! “The piece is made of solid bronze, which has been oxidized to create a darker finish, and features acrylic denture teeth set into it,” Hills says. “I base my collection off of character archetypes of human behavior. This particular piece is part of my character, The Surgeon, which focuses on the idea that we have to do damage in order to heal. I make a set of large, conceptual ‘couture’ pieces for the character, then create smaller, more wearable pieces that can be sold directly to my clients. The dental cuff was inspired by the Surgical Mask I created for this character.”

And though it’s tough to compete with that, M.I.A. gave “glam Grateful Dead concertgoer” her best shot, wearing acid-wash jeans, a multicolor fringe-embellished topper and oversize round sunnies.

Which look captured your attention the most? Do you like Hudgens’s dress? How about Gaga’s grill? Share your thoughts in the comments.

We’re starting to think it may be a requirement for Hollywood starlets to do a stint as the face of Bongo. First Audrina Patridge took the mantle in 2011, followed by Lucy Hale and AnnaSophia Robb. And now Vanessa Hudgens is stepping into the role with a series of sweet and sassy ads for the clothing line.

In the first images from the ad campaign, Hudgens poses in front of a wall covered in custom Bongo graffiti (and, set sources say, picked up a can of spray paint to add her own personal touches as well!) while wearing both a casual Bongo look (jean shorts, a baby tee and pink moto jacket) and a dressier one (a two-piece tribal print outfit with a contrasting red bag). “I really love Bongo because their clothes are super stylish and fashion forward,” Hudgens said in a statement. “Their jeans make everyone look amazing.”

Red Carpet Trend Report: The Scoop on Sexy Midriffs, Unique Cutouts and Shoes That Should Be Left In the Closet

Trend report: sexy midriffs, unique cutoutsGetty; AP; Splash News Online

In our weekly roundup of the looks that are gaining fashion ground (and the ones losing their style street cred), we saw lots of skin and a pair of shoes that need to walk themselves off the red carpet.

Up: Bare Midriffs. The frigid east coast temperatures can’t stop some of our favorite ladies from showing off their toned tummies (and making us want to do crunches at our desks). Maria Menounos chose to display a sliver of skin with a Black Halo ensemble while Jena Malone opted for a black bustier and matching asymmetrical skirt. Solange Knowles and Vanessa Hudgens took fashion risks by wearing printed crop tops (which do you prefer, bugs or bats?). Even pregnant Kerry Washington got in on the skin-showing game at the SAG Awards, wearing a custom-made Prada crop top; that showed off her baby bump.

Up: Unique Cutouts. Stars who didn’t display their abs this week instead showed skin via strategically placed cutouts. Abbie Cornish made us do a double-take at her daring dress for the RoboCop photocall in Beverly Hills; Emmy Rossum had a complicated series of cutouts in the bodice of her two-tone J.Mendel halter, while Emma Roberts proved that we can still be surprised by cutouts in her black-and-white Cushnie et Ochs dress.

Down: These Shoes. We love how relaxed and chic newlywed Kaley Cuoco looks in her outfit –- but those shoes take “comfortable” to a level we don’t often see on the red carpet, and for good reason. We are all for shoes that don’t give the wearer blinding pain, but may we suggest a pair of cute oxfords, like Jena Malone wore, or the Louboutin sandals Emma Thompson sported at the SAG Awards? There’s no excuse for scuffed, witchy loafers with a floor-length skirt.

It’s no secret that PeopleStyleWatch.com editors love a good braid. So anytime we spot a plait trend we’re obsessing over, we have to immediately share it with you. And thanks to Vanessa Hudgens, Olivia Palermo and Sarah Hyland, we now bring you the perfect braid to wear in between washes. (You know, when all you have time for is some dry shampoo and a four-second fix.)

Hudgens (the queen of the messy side braid) teamed her low-key hairstyle with a very glam Monique Lhuillier at the Gimme Shelter premiere in N.Y.C. It’s so loose it’s almost a pony, but a few tucked-in strands put this squarely into “super-loose side braid” territory. Next, Olivia Palermo teamed her relaxed plait with a menswear-inspired look at the “Notes On Creativity” exhibition in N.Y.C., while Sarah Hyland got her side-sweep on for a visit to Sirius XM radio.

Kylie Jenner and Vanessa Hudgens Debut Blonde-Dipped Tips at Coachella

We expected a lot of noteworthy hair happening this weekend at Coachella — after all, it’s a veritable Mecca for crazy braids, wild curls, neon streaks and (of course) flower crowns. But two stars in particular stood out among the rest of the feathered-and-beaded festival attendees: Vanessa Hudgens (left) and Kylie Jenner, both of whom went much blonder for the Indio, Calif. music festival.

Hudgens spent part of the weekend obscuring her entire face under a scarf, making it difficult to get a full view of her newly-lightened locks. But when she changed into her bikini top, jean shorts and oversized Western-inspired jewelry and belt, her much-blonder hair was on full display. She’s currently brunette to about her ears, at which point her hair becomes allover blonde, fading from sandy to nearly platinum at the tips, which cascade down her back. Like Selena Gomez, she added a hat and face jewelry to complete her Coachella transformation.

RELATED PHOTOS: Love her outfit! Get inspired by celeb style here!

Jenner, Gomez’s right-hand woman for the festival, also showed off some much-blonder (and significantly shorter) locks for the weekend. She’s had lighter ends for a while now, but her Coachella look had a much sharper brunette-to-blonde contrast, plus it looks like she lopped off about three inches. She tucked it up into a messy bun under a flower crown to DJ with big sis Kendall at another event.

How are you feeling about Vanessa and Kylie’s blonder-for-Coachella dos? Think they should go all the way?

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher spent their weekend at the Stagecoach country music festival in Indio, Calif., and definitely embraced the laid-back, denim-heavy dress code. The mom-to-be flashed her growing belly in an ivory crochet top paired with cutoffs, while Kutcher kept things cowboy in a black hat, white tee, bandana neck tie and big belt buckle.

So far Kunis’s maternity style has been all about comfort and low-key pieces, but we’re curious to see how she dresses up her bump for red carpet events in the future.

Lastly, Vanessa Hudgens and her long-term boyfriend Austin Butler attended church together Sunday in Studio City, Calif, in hipster outfits similar to what one of our editors sees them wearing frequently in their Brooklyn neighborhood. Butler stuck to his uniform: black skinny jeans and a flannel.

Lightening her locks isn’t the only thing Vanessa Hudgens is doing in preparation of summer. The actress is also getting ready for her best friend’s wedding (and that best friend happens to be High School Musical co-star Ashley Tisdale). First up: Tisdale’s rapidly approaching bachelorette party.

“Ashley’s bachelorette party will be my first one,” Hudgens told PEOPLE at the Candie’s Foundation’s National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy event, during which she was honored. Although she’s not helping to plan Tisdale’s “last fling before the ring,” (“I’m just going for the good times,” Hudgens said), she is thrilled for her friend’s big day.

“It’s so exciting. And, it’s so crazy because I just think of us as having fun and being silly and the fact that she is getting married, my mind is kind of exploding,” said Hudgens.

RELATED PHOTOS: You don’t want to miss these star style showdowns

But when it’s time for the festivities, the stylish star will have her party look ready to go. “I do [my makeup] myself all the time. A good cat eye and a bold lip are super simple and easy,” Hudgens shared. “And, I’m really into matte lipsticks right now.
